چکیده

We determined the distances to nine pulsars by parallax measurements using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array, doubling the number of pulsars with accurate distance measurements. Broadband phase modeling was used to calibrate the varying dispersive effects of the ionosphere and remove the resulting phase errors from the phase-referenced VLBI data. The resulting parallaxes have a typical accuracy of 100 microarcseconds or better, yielding distances measurements as accurate as 2%. We also report new proper motion measurements of these pulsars, accurate to 400 μas yr or better. Subject headings: astrometry — techniques: interferometric — pulsars

Pulsar Astrometry with the VLBA

Many features of the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) contrive to make it the best telescope for pulsar astrometry. The measured proper motions and parallaxes allow distances and transverse velocities to be determined. These in turn provide clues to questions spanning nuclear astrophysics on scales of 10−23 m to the distribution of gas in the Galaxy on scales of 10 m. Three pulsars are discussed...

Precision southern hemisphere VLBI pulsar astrometry II: measurement of seven parallaxes

Accurate measurement of pulsar distances via astrometry using very long baseline interferometry enables the improvement of Galactic electron density distribution models, improving distance estimates for the vast majority of pulsars for which parallax measurements are unavailable. However, pulsars at southern declinations have been under–represented in previous interferometric astrometry campaig...

Precision VLBI astrometry: Instrumentation, algorithms and pulsar parallax determination

This thesis describes the development of DiFX, the first general–purpose software correlator for radio interferometry, and its use with the Australian Long Baseline Array to complete the largest Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) pulsar astrometry program undertaken to date in the Southern Hemisphere. This two year astrometry program has resulted in the measurement of seven new pulsar par...

VLBI Techniques in Pulsar Astronomy

Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) provides the resolution needed to make precision measurements of a pulsar’s parallax and proper motion. In making these measurements, the astronomer is faced with difficult calibration problems and a paucity of strong point-like calibrators that ultimately limit the accuracy of parallax measurements of even the brightest pulsars. A new technique to calib...

Trigonometric Parallaxes of Massive Star Forming Regions : I . S 252 & G 232 . 6 + 1 . 0

We are conducting a large program with the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to measure trigonometric parallaxes of massive star-forming regions across the Milky Way. Here we report measurement of the parallax and proper motion of methanol masers in S 252 and G232.6+1.0. The parallax of S 252 is 0.476 ± 0.006 mas (2.10 −0.026 kpc), placing it in the Perseus spiral arm. The parallax of G232.6...
